Dessert Laboratory (디저트연구소) @ Hongdae

Hongdae, Seoul, South Korea

I spend an unhealthy amount of time on Facebook scrolling through food pages (if you haven't liked the 오늘 뭐 먹지? page already, what are you doing with your life?!) and tagging my friends in the posts of the foods that I'm craving. The beautiful atmosphere of this place and the famous peach cheesecake shown online is definitely what prompted Chelsea and I to pay a visit to 디저트연구소, or Dessert Laboratory in Hongdae.

This cafe is hidden in a little alleyway, making it slightly harder to find if you're not looking for it. Make sure to look out for the sign!

We ended up coming here at nighttime, which somehow made the experience just that much more better. I think it enhances the atmosphere.. or maybe that's just me.. 😬

I absolutely love the interior design of this place! It's so (for lack of a better word) aesthetic, and I love how rustic yet modern it looks, with the interesting light fixtures and plants hanging around. Like almost every other cafe in Seoul, it's definitely Instagram worthy.

Besides Korean, they also provide menus in English, Chinese and Japanese (if I'm not mistaken!), making it easier and more accessible to foreigners.

This place is popular for their interesting cake designs, so we ordered their famous peach cheesecake (9000w) and an iced americano (4500w). This is basically a cheesecake hidden in a peach design, as the outer portion is made with white chocolate. I love how innovative they are with cakes like these - there's even a little 'dirt pile' below the peach made out of crumbled cookies!

Was I drinking coffee at night? Yes. Did I really eat a cheesecake when I'm lactose intolerant? Yes. Do I ever make good decisions? Absolutely not.

I don't have any regrets, though, because this cheesecake? Was so good.

They also provided a cute little information card (which I ended up keeping for some reason..) that explains what is in the cheesecake so that you know the ingredients and any potential allergens for those with food allergies. It even warns you not to eat the very much real leaf on top - which is totally necessary, since every other thing looks incredibly realistic!

We demolished this exactly 5 minutes later because we are cheesecake fiends, apparently. I totally, 100% recommend this! The cheesecake is incredibly soft and melts in your mouth almost immediately, and the raspberry sauce is at that perfect level between sweet and tart (you know what I mean?). I've eaten a lot of good cheesecake in my life, but this definitely sits comfortably in my top 5 list. I'd love to go back to try their other cakes and desserts too!

Writing this post just makes me miss Seoul so much, you guys 😢 I just want to be back there cafe hopping and running around all day and night.. And this is also making me crave cheesecake. Like, really badly.
